A 24-hour experience at W Hotel Singapore
Recounting our fabulous time recently spent at this elegant enclave.
The W Hotel Singapore is the perfect hotel for those busy bees who not only wish to temporarily escape their hectic city lives, but who also want to do it all in style. Located on Sentosa Island, the hotel hides away in the intimate perimeters of Sentosa Cove, rendering it an ideal cave to hide from massive Singaporean crowds. The best spoken thing about W Hotel Singapore is that it’s th2 playground of the well-heeled; we are talking about a perfect getaway frequented by celebrities in the Southeast Asian region. So naturally, I had to investigate why.
The W Hotel Singapore is also a Category 6 for its SPG members, which puts it on par with hotels like St. Regis Singapore and the Westin Singapore. The only difference between them is their locations; the latter two are located in the heart of the Lion City. I wanted something supremely remote and relaxing, so naturally the W Hotel was ideal for those with the same goal, as getting in and out to the main island can be a chore.
To get to Sentosa Island, one must hire a cab from Vivocity (at the HarbourFront precinct in Bukit Merah); the entire ride takes you about ten minutes. You can also choose the shuttle bus service to get there, but it takes longer and is certainly not as glamorous! Once on the island, you will find it enlightening to know that touristy destinations such as Universal Studios and Resort World’s Adventure Cove Waterpark are within reach. But while they are nice to add to one’s itinerary, my goal was never to hound tourist traps to begin with, so off I traveled straight to the hotel, to start my short but sweet staycation.
On arrival at the W Hotel Singapore, I was met by one of the three personnel manning the front desk. A good tip: try to reach the hotel sometime in the afternoon (ideally between 2PM to 3PM), because that is when there is the least number of visitors around. And like me, you will immediately like the hotel’s cosy and highly stylish lobby. You can take the experience to the next level by ordering a drink from the adjacent WOOBAR as you wait for your room to be ready (I certainly did!).
As soon as you check into your room at the W Hotel, you are given your keys and a map of Sentosa Island. My room of choice for my staycation was their signature Wonderful Room. Upon entering the room, I immediately noticed that it was extremely spacious; at 40-square meters, the room is certainly one of the bigger hotel rooms to exist in Singapore.
Not only was it super roomy, it was super cool too. The room’s main feature is the headrest of the bed, featuring a tree and butterfly design that lights up with a switch. The room controls sits conveniently next to the bed, allowing one to adjust the light of the headrest as well as that of the entire room from a single, comfortable spot. So if you are in the mood for some serious reading or in need of some romantic lighting (if you’re accompanied), you can adjust your lighting preference accordingly. What I loved about the Wonderful room was that it was a poolfront quarter. With a balcony available, I got to enjoy not only the relaxing view of the body of water, but also the iconic W branding post next to it.
When it was time to work, I could simply resort to writing at the desk that was under the vanity table. And whenever I needed a break and some quick entertainment, the room’s LCD screen TV to turn to.Like magic, can be switched off by closing a drawer next to the bed. There are also plenty of adaptors around the room to help you to connect to various other gadgets for your ultimate enjoyment. Ultimate relaxation Another big perk that I got to truly enjoy in the Wonderful Room was the big bathtub stationed inside its sleek bathroom. Enclosed in beautiful glass windows, the tub represented ultimate exclusive relaxation, which all writers with stressful deadlines can agree on. Seeing that it was a staycation, I didn’t want to pack much toiletries, so I was happy there were the hotel’s signature amenities to relyon, by way of some well-lathering facial wash, shampoo and conditioner. Of course, if one does not prefer the sensation of sinking into a roomy bathtub, rest assured that there is a separate shower stall
When I wasn’t too busy unwinding and unknotting my thoughts, I got to play artist with the minibar. You see, the room came equipped not only with standard drinks and snacks, but the provision of a cocktail kit that allows one to customise my own drinks. Needless to say, I was in heaven.
What is a great hotel without great food to match? At the W Hotel, there are a few places you can dine in here; their best would be SKIRT, hailed as Sentosa Cove’s signature restaurant. Here, you can indulge in succulent offerings of meats, seafood and organic produces char-grilled to perfection on a South-American-style parilla grill. Options for quick drinks and merriment included the WOOBAR, as well as the WET pool deck, where fun snacks, bites, and healthy spreads are to be enjoyed thoroughly as one enjoys his sunny day by the poolside. My staycation at the W Hotel came with a free breakfast in its lobby restaurant called The Kitchen Table. I have been here before for a dinner and needless to say, the experience was rather disappointing. I was hoping to be proven wrong this time around but alas, it was the same. Despite the rave that the breakfast restaurant received, I didn’t see anything noteworthy with its offering. The restaurant’s breakfast spread was limited compared to other hotel restaurants in its league; its only redeeming factor is that it’s got a live omelet station.
Overall, the W Hotel Singapore has an excellent design that proves to be enjoyable to the human soul. As a Starwoods property, the hotel rewards points to guests with SPG membership.Falling under the ‘luxury’ category, a stay at the W Hotel booked through Fayyaz Travels with give you the following benefits: A USD100 spa service credit (per room, per stay) to be redeemed at the hotel’s in-house Away Spa; a daily buffet breakfast for two guests, complementary standard in-room internet access; and an upgrade on arrival, early check-in, and late check-out (all of which are of course subjected to availability).
