6 unique cathedrals to live out your royal wedding fantasy

May 28th, 2018

cathedrals-1

The much-anticipated wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle proved that a traditional wedding is only as good as its location. A couple can look and feel their best on their special day, but if the environment of their nuptials does not reflect their royal spirit, their event can come off as mediocre at best. Indeed, a regal setting says it all! While not the carbon copies of St. George’s Cathedral (where the recent #RoyalWedding had taken place), the following seven unique cathedrals can equally inspire the royal-themed destination wedding you have always dreamed of.

Notre-Dame in Paris, France

This iconic cathedral truly needs no grand introduction. Built in the 11th century, the Notre-Dame has experienced countless restorations to be what it is today. Located in a country that’s not far from England, you best believe that your royal wedding dreams will still come off as regal, but with the added “extra” of a French touch. Can we say, oui?

La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain

If “undone chic” is more of your thing, then why not plan to have your wedding vows exchanged in the confines of La Sagrada Familia. Dubbed one of the world’s best architectural works in history, the majestic basilica owes its design extravagance to revered Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Though opened to the public in 1882, it was still construction by the time the architect met his tragic death in 1926. Nine-two years later, and it is still a work in progress. But thanks to the help of current architect
Jordi Faulí, the basilica is expected to finally reach artistic completion in 2026.

Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík, Iceland

Don’t think we have forgotten you minimalist couples out there! Those of you who favour clean, postmodern lines over curvy Gothic aesthetics can turn to the Hallgrímskirkja Church in Reykjavík,Iceland, to manifest your dream wedding. In our imagination, this would be where Prince Harry and Meghan could have ended up marrying in should they prefer the tundra’s icy beauty. Founded in 1945, this Lutheran church stands at 74.5 metres high, making it the largest church in Iceland, and one of the country’s tallest structures to exist.

Gergeti Trinity Church in Georgia

Dreaming of a small-sized spiritual wedding that does not skimp on jaw-dropping backgrounds? Then look no further than the Gergeti Trinity Church in Gergeti, Georgia. With its splendour of medieval opulence, the site’s orthodox silhouette provides a contrast against the timeless beauty of Mount Kazbegi. Depending on the time of your planned visit, the snow-capped mountain can appear either green or blue, so imagine how outstanding your photos will be with it as your backdrop.

Church of the Transfiguration in Kizhi Island, Russia

Another big stunner in our list is the Church of the Transfiguration. Unsurprisingly, the church is a UNESCO Heritage Site, and is considered one of Kizhi Pogost’s wondrous gems. Built to perfection without a single use of nails, this multi-domed, 300-year-old church is perhaps the purist couple’s best bet. What you see of the Church of the Transfiguration today is the result of a reconstruction effort made in 1714, after the original site was ruined by lightning. As there are no built-in heaters here, it can get brutally cold during the winter. So we would highly suggest you visit during the summer.

Cathedral of Brasília in Brasília, Brazil

Designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (who’s also known for his contribution to the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum in Rio de Janeiro), the Cathedral of Brasília is a deliberate hyperbole. The entire building looks literally like a crown, making it a great choice for your own royal wedding. If you think that its facade is breathtaking, wait until you head inside, where the cathedral’s beautiful stained glass ceiling will illuminate you with an endless shower of colours.
