Explore the highlights of the four most beautiful provinces of the Oriente: In the footsteps of the revolution in Granma with stagecoach town of Bayamo and Fidel’s former headquarters in Sierra Maestra, Santiago – the cradle of Cuban son with its cultural diversity, the Afro-Cuban embossed Guantánamo with the tropical idyll Baracoa and finally Holguín with the sedate fishing village Gibara, hardly touched by tourism. Experience the secrets of the east with a colorful mix of nature, culture and history of the revolution and the opportunity to extend the vacation e.g. on the beaches of Guardalavaca.

Day 01: Arrival in Holguin Airport and trip to Bayamo

Morning pick up by the guide at the hotel in Guardalavaca or in Holguín airport and trip to Bayamo – the starting point of the struggle for liberation from Spanish colonial rule. Here also the Cuban national anthem “La Bayamesa“ was composed. (B/D)

Day 02: Travel to Santa Domingo for day excursion to Sierra Maestra Mountains and sightseeing

In the morning walk on the main square with its horse-drawn carriages and the birthplace of the national hero Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. Departure and travel to Santo Domingo. Excursion into mountains of the Sierra Maestra. Excursion by jeep or truck on a breathtakingly steep route to the hights Alto de Naranjo (950 m) with stunning panoramic views. Then hike on jungle-like paths through an impressive natural world to Comandancia de la Plata, Fidel Castro’s hideout and headquarters in the Sierra – now a museum. Visit the well-preserved command post with field hospital and the first transmitting station of the legendary Radio Rebelde. After a rustic mountain meal in the early afternoon continue to Niquero. Stop at the memorial site La Demajagua where the plantation owners and National hero Carlos Manuel de Céspedes gave freedom for his slaves. After that visit of the lighthouse Faro de Cabo Cruz. Day 03: Drive to National Park Desembarco de Granma and hiking in El Guafe Trail

Early in the morning drive through the still noticeable by the spirit of revolution blewn coastline at Manzanillo to the National Park Desembarco de Granma. At noon, arriving in Las Coloradas, where Fidel Castro landed in 1956 coming from Mexico with the “Granma” with 82 revolutionary on board – including his brother Raúl (now President of Cuba) and the young doctor Ernesto Ché Guevara. Visit the landing site with information at that event. Opportunity to hike the trail El Guafe (1,5 hours). Late in the afternoon arrival at Marea de Portillo and time at leasure e.g. on the beach.. Day 04: Drive to SanXago from Marea de Portillo

Today ́s route is one of the highlights of the journey. During the ride on the reaccessible road between Marea de Portillo and Santiago one has a sensational view over the quaint landscape. Please note that sometimes it must be driven slowly. Although the road is in bad condition, it is one of the most beautiful routes of the Island, off the beaten track. However, there is no alternative if one wants to get to know this very scenic, interesting and very typical part of Cuba. We do not
recommend this trip to guests who shy away from long bus rides and do not tolerate bumpy road conditions. Arrival in Santiago in the late afternoon. (B)

Day 05: Sightseeing and drive to Cayo Granma

In the morning visit of the in 1953 by Fidel and his men attacked Moncada Barracks. At noon drive to Cayo Granma and lunch in the restaurant. Visit of the El Morro fortress – UNESCO World Heritage site with stunning views over the bay. Subsequently, through the former villas and residential area and visit of the Vista Allegre San Juan Hill from the Spanish-American-Cuban War of Independence. Past the Revolution square and Santa Iphigenia, a cemetery with the graves of the Bacardí dynasty and the national hero José Martí. Stroll through the historic center of Parque Céspedes, Calle Heredia, Plaza Dolores, stairs alley Padre Pico and Casa Velázquez- the oldest house in the city. In the evening visit to the legendary Casa de la Trova, the cradle of Cuban son, where famous musicians such as Compay Segundo (Buena Vista Social Club) began their careers (B/L)

Day 06: Drive to Guantánamo and sightseeing in Baracoa

Morning drive towards Guantánamo – the stronghold of the Afro-Cuban Santería and Haitian voodoo cult, also known by the nearby U.S. Navy base. Continue through a desert-like landscape with cactus ́ on tropical green mountains, on the breathtaking pass road La Farola down to Baracoa, where Columbus once landed. In the late afternoon visit to the city museum Matachín and walk over the main square with the church of Nuestra Señora de Asunción and the Columbus cross. Dinner e.g. at restaurant “La Punta” bordering the bay of Baracoa. (B/D)

Day 07: Day excursion to coffee, cocoa and banana plantations and boat ride in Río Toa  

Excursion into the tropical surroundings with coffee, cocoa and banana plantations and view towards the towering table mountain El Yunque. Opportunity to chat with campesinos when visiting a finca and romantic boat ride through the nature of the Río Toa or Río Duaba. Lunch on the way on a finca surrounded by nature. Afternoon at leisure. (B/L)

Day 08: Drive to Cayo Saeaa and enjoy swimming and snorkelling in the afternoon

Early in the morning drive through the National Park Alexander von Humboldt along the adventurous panoramic coastal road, past deserted bays of Moa (center of Nickel mining) to Cayo Saetía. Rustic lunch and time to swim and snorkel.(B/L)

Day 09: Day trip to Finca Manacas, Holguin and Gibara

In the morning drive towards Cueto with excursion to the Finca Manacas at Birán6. The birthplace of Fidel Castro was open to the public just a few years ago and offers interesting insights into his life and the conditions before the revolution. Continue to Holguín, known as the City of Parks. With possibility of climbing the famous Loma de la Cruz within the city. Then visit to Gibara, a city that is rarely visited by tourists, and located 30 km outside of Holguín in a beautiful coastal area.
Overnight stay with breakfast and dinner: typical standard hotel, e.g. Hotel Encanto Ordoño (3*) in neoclassical style with decorated rooms and a rooftop terrace overlooking the city and the bay of Gibara. (B/D)

Day 10: Explore Gibara before departing to the airport  

In the morning, time to explore the village. After that transfer to Holguín airport (B)
