One of the oldest cities of Central Asia, Samarkand is situated in east-central Uzbekistan, in the valley of river Zeravshan. The city assumes historic significance because of its vantage location on the ancient silk-route to China. Host to numerous UNESCO world heritage sites, Samarkand’s ancient mosques, madrasas and the famous towering tomb of Tamerlane, are popular tourist attractions.
