5 breathtaking winter destinations to end 2019 in
As 2019 draws to a close, it’s time to plan a vacation. While many would seek tropical settings to unwind and recap their year, others (like us) prefer colder climates to walk down memory lane. Think fireplaces and hot cocoas! With Christmas around the corner as well, nothing charms the mind and heart quite like a snowy destination. As the famous saying goes, winter is here. Here are some unique winter destinations that our team at Fayyaz Travels are currently dreaming about.
1. Whistler, Canada
Canada is pretty much cold all year, which makes it a great host for winter destinations. Enter Whistler. This place is famous among skiers who look for an added thrill to their ski experience. Check out the Whistler Ski Resort, which is two hours away from Vancouver. Skiiers from all over the world would come here to do all kinds of stunts, from downhill skiing to heli-skiing, and then go on to explore cross-country trails nearby. After tackling some serious slopes all day long, you can expect to enjoy some warm cocoa by the fire in your chalet. If a family trip is more of your jam, no problem! This town is also known for being a great setting for family ski trips.
2. Patagonia, Argentina
It is technically summer in Patagonia right now but it’s still pretty chilly here, which makes it a sweet spot for travellers who love the cold but in minimal amounts. Located in South America’s southernmost tip, the region is shared by Argentina and Chile, with the majestic snow-capped Andes Mountains dividing them. But not all borders call for differences. Both the Argentinean and Chilean sides of Patagonia feature a mix of glacial fjords, temperate forests, and quiet aridness. Its beautiful landscape perfected by the snow-capped Andes will surely lure you to consider a hike with your loved ones. When here, don’t forget to visit the Los Glaciares National Park. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site preferred by rock climbers and mountaineers alike.
3. Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is a resort area which crosses three countries. It’s located near the junction of France, Switzerland, and Italy. Its highest summit, Mont Blanc, is known for being a big favourite among skiers worldwide. Chamonix-Mont-Blanc’s popularity was owed to the fact that it was the chosen setting the 1924 Winter Olympics, for which it received worldwide attention. Since then, the destination has received variations of skiers from around the world, from beginners to extreme performers. The entire region houses six different ski areas, wherein many outdoors excursions such as hiking, rock climbing, and paragliding are offered. When not busy conquering slippery slopes, visitors love enjoying the panoramic views of the glacier fields that extend along the Italian border.
4. The Alpine Villages in Tyrol, Austria
Austria is home to numerous alps that extend through borders of its neighbouring states. It makes for picturesque rural landscapes, on which the prettiest alpine villages exist. The Austrian state of Tyrol, for one, has a big number of alpine villages. In them, you can find beautiful ski resorts, historic sites, folksy traditions, and simple yet delicious alpine cuisine staples such as potatoes, cheese, and cured meat. When in Innsbruck, Tyrol’s capital city, look out for the Habsburg Empire landmarks, such as the baroque-style Hofburg Palace and Gothic Hofkirche Church. When in Tyrol, don’t forget to also visit the Almdorf Fallerschein, where 40 rustic cabins can be found — and booked!
5. Niseko in Hokkaido, Japan
Hokkaido, Japan, is an ideal place to travel to if you seek to spend wintertime in Asia. This destination seems capable of maintaining its colourful beauty in spring even throughout winter. Most people who come to visit would stay at Niseko, Hokkaido’s most famous ski town. It sits near the dormant volcano of the incredibly photogenic Mount Yotei. But Niseko’s not just about skiing. Many visitors would carve out relaxation time by visiting Shiribetsu River, a site known for its white-water rapids. Besides winter activities such as snowboarding and sledging, visitors also get to indulge in hot springs hosted at many resorts surrounding Mount Yotei. Sounds tempting? You bet!
