Music festivals to harmonise the rest of 2017
Sonically uplifting destinations to round up what’s left of the year.
Traveling for a music festival is an adventure in its own accord. Those who do it appears to have the prospect of extasis deeply embedded in their cores. And what’s not to want about it? More than just a place where one enjoys new or familiar tunes, destination festivals are an opportunity of a lifetime for people from all walks of life to meet, exchange stories, and connect. Whether a seasoned goer or a first-timer, you can rest assured that the rest of your 2017 is sweetened by the following events.
#1. Classic relaxation in Del Mar, California, USA
Not your typical mud-and-sweat event, KAABOO prides itself in being a “curated escape” where one can enjoy festival entertainment while reaping the benefits of an ultra-comfortable environment. Taking place from 15 to 17 September in Del Mar, California, the festival is set to feature classic acts the likes of Weezer, Alanis Morissette, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Expect to also enjoy contemporary art, eat delicious food, and laugh at live comedy along the way. When not dancing and singing along to your favourite ol’ school tunes, you should bask in Del Mar’s sculpted sea breeze, seaside architecture and pristine beaches.
#2. Dress up games in East Lulworth, United Kingdom
Usually taking place on the Isle of Wight, the famed Bestival is set to shake things up at the Lulworth Estate in Dorset this year, from 7 to 10 September. Famous for its diverse cultures and creative settings, the festival changes its theme every year. This only means one thing: you will never run dry of fancy-dressing inspirations. Music-wise, old forces get to share the same space as the new ones; think Elton John sharing the stage with Snoop Dogg! Travelers with a penchant for design can also seek amusement from quirky art installations such as giant disco balls and crazy pinatas.
#3. Endless dancing in Jakarta, Indonesia
Want to experience something wilder in Southeast Asia for the end of the year? Why don’t you head on to Djakarta Warehouse Project 2017. Happening on 15 and 16 December, this music festival highlights the best of electronic dance music (EDM) from all over the world. Given its relatively small scale, Djakarta is a niche project, but its collective energy on the dancefloor is unbridled. This year’s lineup of big-leaguers and rising stars is led by Tiësto, Flume, and Galantis.
#4. Desert dwelling in Black Rock City, USA
Nothing like Burning Man to check off your to-do list, and if you hadn’t the chance to attend in the past, perhaps this year bears your chance. Located smack in the middle of the Nevada desert, this cult festival is NOT the faint-hearted. Being a non-corporate event, Burning Man entails the annual construction of the temporary metropolis Black Rock City via the participation of 50,000 festival goers, event managers and artists. This year’s installment starts on 27 August and ends on 4 September.
#5. Rhythmic expansions in Pula, Croatia
Want to experience “crazy” without going all out? Check out the one-of-a-kind Dimensions Festival, taking place at Pula’s Fort Punta Christo from 30 August to 3 September. Think sleek, city-like electronic music experience decked in lush historical surroundings and crisp island atmosphere. When not enjoying the main concerts at Pula’s awe-inspiring Roman Amphitheatre, one can dance the night away on boats with their favourite DJs. Stars of the 5-day show include Grace Jones, Moderat, Moses Boyd and Yussef Kamaal.
#6. Twilight camping in Las Vegas, USA
In need of some reboot? Head to Life is Beautiful, a three-day festival extravaganza allows attendees to enjoy music, art and food without all the mud. What’s more interesting is that you get to camp under Nevada’s majestic night sky while at it! From 22 to 24 September, you can bask in performances of by Blink 182, Gorillaz and The XX and more while relishing flavours from Las Vegas’s top restaurateurs. When feeling extra existential, you can also enjoy thought-provoking talks and art installations.
