Ramadan Specials: Best bets for halal eateries

June 13th, 2017

Ramadan and big buffet spreads admittedly go together. But there will be times when you don’t really have the time to indulge in trains of food, due to work and other commitments. Perhaps you just don’t feel like it! In this case, a quick iftar session at quaint, chic cafes are a brilliant idea. And who says express fast-breaking and flavours don’t go together? These seven Singaporean halal eateries would testify.

Swedish Cafe

Nothing like trying something completely new to restore vitality during bleak days. Inject a little taste of Scandinavia into your quick iftar affair at Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro. Since the Swedish word “fika” translates into social institution, you can bet that your gastronomic needs will be well taken care of. Taking center stage this month is their Ramadan menu, available at both their Beach Road and OneKM outlets. We spy our little eyes on Fika’s Rosehip Soup, a flavourful concoction of Vitamin C and antioxidants, for starters. As for mouth-watering mains, their Herb-Crusted Salmon, Garlic Pasta with Meatballs, and Steak with Warm Potato Salad dishes are to die for.

Located on 257 Beach Road, and in OneKM, 11 Tanjong Katong Road, Singapore.

Turkish Cafe

Craving for Turkish delight? Set yourself for an experience at Sofra, the 16-year-old eatery taking precedence on Beach Road. Their menu are as authentically Turkish as you can get. Beam over their signature dishes: the Izgara Kofte, a selection of Turkish-style meatballs, and Sofra Kebab, an amalgamation of melt-in-your-mouth meat, tomato, and cheese served on fresh bread rolls. Then, take your experience further with an order of Turkish coffee or hot apple tea!

100 Beach Road, #02-42 Shaw Tower, Shaw Leisure Gallery, Singapore.

Have enough time for a set? Consider The Lab’s Ramadan set menu, priced at $38 per person. The set features a starter, followed by a main course, dessert and drink of choice—enough to keep you full for the whole night. To start your savoury journey, you can choose either Rice Vermicelli Scallop Rolls, Teriyaki Beef Wraps or Talam Lauk Quiche. Then, follow up with a hearty main choice of either Mediterranean Meat Goulash, Shrimp Mango Salsa Burger, Asam Rebus Pasta, Ocean Spread or Itik Percik (duck with percik sauce). For dessert, you can round up with either a serving of Banana Cheesecake or Sticky Date Pudding.

Located at 1 Jalan Pisang, #01-01, Singapore.

Orange Lantern

The halal-certified Orange Lantern is certainly proud of its ability to serve of authentic Vietnamese cuisine, all under the light of beautiful silk lanterns. While they don’t exactly promote a Ramadan menu, the restaurant has a vast selection of oriental dishes that will satiate your tastebuds. Look to their star options such as the Vietnamese Beef Hot Pot, Vegetarian Stir-Fried Rice, or Fresh Rice Paper Rolls with Prawns for an originally Asian iftar session!

Located on 73, Killiney Road, Singapore.

Brought to you by the brainchilds behind Arab Street, Afterwit takes a halal spin on Mexican cuisine. Take note that the one thing you should come equipped with is an open mind. Not one to stay safe, the Afterwit team loves their unusual pairings, evident in the way their gourmet tacos are served with artisanal Mexican coffee. Other crazy creations include Crab with Butter Tacos, Chicken Katsu Tacos, and our personal favourite, the Peking Duck Tacos garlanded with hoisin sauce.

Located at 778 North Bridge Road, Singapore.

Cucina Italian

When in doubt, eat Italian. Proving that they can do no wrong, the Muslim-owned Cucina Italian Restaurant takes pride in serving halal Italian food. As if it can’t get any better, the chef operating the eatery has more than 24 years of experience, ensuring that you feel safe with your choices! Beam over delicious seafood options such as the Gnocchi in Salmon Sauce and Seafood Risotto. Die-hard meat lovers can find solace in Cucina’s Braised Lamb Shanks. Not feeling those heavy mains? Then check out their thin crust pizzas, poised to take you on a mildly savoury journey throughout iftar. If you have room for dessert, then don’t forget to order Tortino, their signature chocolate lava cake.

Located in Aperia Mall, 12 Kallang Avenue, Singapore.
