Amritsar (located in Northwest India) is a vibrant yet relaxed and friendly city full of well-stocked bazaars, mosques and temples of Sikh and Hindu religions. The City is most famous for the spectacular Golden Temple which is the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion, whereby the golden exterior shimmers in a pool of sacred water. Sacked by the Afghans in 1761, the shrine was rebuilt by the Sikhs’ greatest secular leader, Maharajah Ranjit Singh.

On Day 2, you will visit the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the market. Also known as the Hari Mandir, the Golden Temple is the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. A blend of Hindu and Muslim styles, the temple is topped with a golden dome that is said to be gilded with 100 kg of pure gold. Just a 5-minute walk from the temple is the park known as Jallianwala Bagh, which commemorates the 2,000 Indians who were killed or wounded here by the British in the 1919 massacre. This event is considered one of the most important in India’s struggle for independence. Next, you will be taken for a stroll through Amritsar’s market.
Late afternoon, your guide will accompany you to the Wagah border to witness the ‘lowering of the flags’ ceremony.
Each day at sunset the border guards of India and Pakistan assemble for this ceremony. Each army parades in an immaculately turned out display of synchronized marching and bellowed military commands with each side doing its best to out-do the other with shouting and marching. The ritual ends as the sun goes down, the flag of each country is lowered, and the gates are slammed shut.

The main structure is set amidst landscaped gardens, while on three sides it is surrounded by high walls and the rear is bound by the river Yamuna.

The Fort is situated 1 km upstream of the Taj Mahal, on the right bank of the Yamuna.
