Top mistakes that cost travellers money when booking a trip to Switzerland (and how to avoid them)
Let’s start with the obvious.
Switzerland is stunning. It’s also famously expensive. According to global cost of living reports, Switzerland remains the most expensive country in Europe year after year. A bowl of soup?
That’ll be SGD 30. A scenic train ride? Worth it but definitely not cheap. We’ve helped enough families plan their Switzerland trip from Singapore to know where the money goes and where it doesn’t need to.
So here it is. The real list. No sugar coating. No fluff. Just honest mistakes that cost travellers money and how to avoid them.

1. Planning a 3- or 4-day trip to Switzerland from Singapore
It sounds efficient, but it’s not. We see this a lot… travellers flying all the way from Singapore, landing groggy, rushing through Lucerne, Interlaken, Zermatt and flying out again. You spend more time unpacking and repacking than actually soaking in the views.
Short trips end up costing more per day, and they don’t feel like a holiday.
If you’re tight on time, focus on one region and do it well. Or better yet, combine Switzerland with a nearby country like France or Italy. Make the most of the time and money you’ve already spent on flights.
2. Leaving your planning to the last month
Yes, we can do it. But contacting us a month before your Switzerland family tour means higher prices on hotels, trains and activities. It also means limited options. Especially if you’re aiming for Glacier Express or Jungfraujoch.
We’re known as one of the most trusted travel agencies in Singapore for a reason - we’re transparent. We’ll make it happen for you. But smart travellers plan early. Give yourself time and flexibility, and your wallet will thank you.
3. Booking tours or experiences that don’t match your vibe
We see this mistake all the time - people booking Geneva day tours thinking it’s a “must do”. Unless you’re into politics, diplomacy, or banking, it’s probably not going to be the highlight of your trip. Same goes for museum heavy days when you’re travelling with kids who just want to see snow.
For our history buffs, these are great. But if that’s not you, we don’t recommend it. Stick with what feels true to your travel style. Scenic trains, lake cruises, chocolate museums, picnics by waterfalls… those are the moments you’ll remember.
4. Trying to do too many places in too few days
We get it. Switzerland is beautiful everywhere. But cramming in Zurich, Lucerne, Bern, Interlaken, Zermatt, Montreux and Lauterbrunnen in one week? That’s not a holiday. That’s a checklist. Internal transport in Switzerland is efficient, but it’s not cheap. Every train ride, hotel change and luggage haul add up financially and mentally.
We always recommend choosing two or three top destinations and staying longer. You’ll rest more. Spend less. And enjoy better.

5. Not getting a Swiss Half Fare Card or checking travel pass options
This one is a quiet money drainer. A lot of travellers think point to point tickets will be cheaper. Sometimes, yes. Most of the time, no. The Swiss Half Fare Card gives you 50% off trains, boats, mountain rides and more. We help clients calculate whether it’s worth it for their trip. And we’re honest if it’s not.
6. Travelling during peak season without knowing what that means
July and August look great on Instagram. But they’re crowded, expensive and booked out. Even shoulder months like early June or September offer much better experiences at lower costs. Our clients often thank us for nudging them towards May or September. You still get lake cruises, scenic train rides, and mountain views… just without the price tag and queues.
7. Forgetting to reserve popular experiences in advance
We’re talking Glacier Express, Gornergrat, GoldenPass Line, and Jungfraujoch. These aren’t “we’ll see how we feel” kind of bookings. These need to be locked in early if you want the good seats or the good views. Our team handles these for our clients, because nothing’s worse than planning your dream day and getting told it’s fully booked.

8. Eating every meal out at tourist hotspots
We’re all for good food. But eating every meal in old town squares or near train stations will eat through your budget fast. We usually suggest a mix: local bakeries for breakfast, picnics by the lake for lunch, and splurge meals only when it’s really worth it. Some of the best Swiss meals we’ve had came from supermarkets and balcony dinners.
Final thoughts: book smart, not just fast
Switzerland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world but if you don’t plan it right, you’ll end up paying more than you need to for an experience that doesn’t feel worth it. That’s why clients trust Fayyaz Travels. We don’t upsell. We don’t do cookie cutter packages. We plan based on who you are, how you like to travel, and what’s actually worth your time.
