Applying for a Japan Visa from Singapore in 2026: Updated Checklist for Travellers

Applying for a Japan Visa from Singapore in 2026: Updated Checklist for Travellers

Planning a holiday to Japan from Singapore? Before finalising your Japan travel plans, one important question needs to be answered:

Do you actually need a Japan visa?

The answer depends mainly on your nationality and immigration status in Singapore.

Singapore citizens can generally visit Japan without a visa for stays of up to 90 days as a Temporary Visitor. However, foreign nationals living in Singapore may need to apply for a visa depending on their nationality.

If you are a foreign resident in Singapore and need a tourist visa, the application process has also changed. As of September 2026, applications are handled through the Japan Visa Application Centre (JVAC) rather than being submitted directly at the Embassy for ordinary tourism.

Here is what to prepare.

1. Check if you need a visa

The first step is checking Japan's visa exemption rules for your passport.

Singapore passport holders do not need a visa for a short-term visit of up to 90 days. If you hold another nationality, do not assume that living in Singapore automatically means you can enter Japan visa-free.

Only long-term residents of Singapore can generally apply for a Japan visa in Singapore. The Embassy states that applicants must hold a valid Singapore identity document such as a PR, Employment Pass, S Pass, Work Permit, Student Pass, Dependant's Pass or Long-Term Visit Pass and be residing in Singapore.

Tourists and short-term visitors to Singapore are not eligible to apply there.

Tip: Check your nationality's visa requirement before making your Japan travel arrangements.

2. Know where to submit your application

For ordinary visa applications, the Japan Visa Application Centre (JVAC) currently handles submission and collection in Singapore. The Embassy states that applications should generally be submitted through JVAC rather than directly at the Embassy.

There is also a Japan eVisa for eligible applicants travelling for tourism. The eVisa is a separate online application process, so don't assume that the document-submission rules for a physical application automatically apply to an eVisa application.

You may also be eligible to apply for a single-entry Japan eVisa for tourism, depending on your circumstances.

The exact documents required can vary according to your nationality, residence status and type of visa. Always check the current JVAC checklist that applies to your application.

For a typical sightseeing application, you may need the following.

1. Valid passport

Bring your valid passport.

The JVAC checklist states that the passport should have at least two blank pages. Japan itself does not require six months of passport validity for entry; however, airlines or countries you transit through may have their own requirements.

2. Recent passport photograph

Prepare a recent colour photograph taken within six months.

The photograph should have a plain white, untextured background and show your face clearly and centrally.

3. Singapore identity card or immigration pass

Foreign residents should provide proof of their legal residence in Singapore.

Depending on your status, this could include your:

  • Singapore PR identity card
  • Employment Pass
  • S Pass
  • Work Permit
  • Dependant's Pass
  • Student Pass
  • Long-Term Visit Pass

Digital passes may also require the relevant QR code or verification information.

Make sure your Singapore pass remains valid for your Japan trip and your return to Singapore.

4. Certificate of Employment or business documents

If you are employed, you may need a Certificate of Employment issued by your employer.

The current checklist states that this should be issued within one month of the application and include information such as your position, salary, employment start date and signature.

Business owners may instead need an ACRA Business Registration Profile, generally issued within three months.

5. Proof of financial ability

You may need to provide evidence that you can financially support your Japan trip.

The current checklist accepts either:

  • your latest IRAS Notice of Assessment, or
  • updated personal bank statements/passbook showing your name, current balance and transaction history for two months.

6. Flight information

Prepare your round-trip flight information.

The details should show your name, departure and return flights, airports, flight numbers, dates and times.

Your application should be consistent with the travel dates shown in your itinerary and other supporting documents.

Remember that having flight information prepared does not mean you should purchase non-refundable flights before your visa situation is settled.

7. Daily schedule of stay

This is one document travellers should not treat as an afterthought.

Japan's current checklist asks for a daily itinerary, including your arrival date, activities for each day and departure date.

Avoid writing only: "Sightseeing" "Shopping"

The Embassy specifically asks applicants to provide more detailed activities in Japan.

For example:

Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo → hotel check-in → Shibuya evening

Day 2: Asakusa → Senso-ji → Tokyo Skytree → Akihabara

Day 3: Meiji Shrine → Harajuku → Shinjuku

Can someone else submit your application?

This is one area where physical JVAC applications and eVisa applications should be treated separately.

For physical applications at JVAC

The Embassy's current FAQ states that, in principle, applicants should submit their applications in person.

For third-party submissions, the current Embassy guidance says that, with the exception of Employers of Domestic Helpers, only family members residing in Singapore, excluding minors, are allowed to submit applications on behalf of the applicant at JVAC.

So you should not assume that a travel agent or company representative can submit a physical JVAC application on your behalf.

Check the current Embassy/JVAC instructions for your specific circumstances before arranging a third-party submission.

For Japan eVisa applications

The eVisa process has different rules.

The current eVisa guidance allows an application to be made on behalf of an applicant in certain circumstances, including by an authorised travel agent or company representative, subject to the applicable authorisation requirements.

This means the submission rules for an eVisa should not be combined with the rules for physical JVAC applications.

If someone is submitting an eVisa application on your behalf, check the current eVisa checklist and make sure the required authorisation is provided.

When should you apply?

Don't leave your Japan visa application until the last minute. The Embassy states that applications should only be made within three months of the intended travel date. It also says processing takes one week or longer when there are no issues with the application. Some cases can take considerably longer if additional documents or further examination are required.

Some applications can take longer if additional documents are requested or further examination is required. The Embassy notes that some cases can take considerably longer than the standard processing period. For this reason, it's better to prepare your documents early and allow sufficient time before your planned departure.

Don't plan your trip around the minimum processing time.

What if Japan asks for additional documents?

Sometimes the initial checklist isn't the end of the process.

The Embassy may request additional documents or information depending on your individual circumstances. If this happens, the examination may take longer because the application cannot continue until the requested information is provided.

This is another reason not to wait until just before your departure date.

If you receive a request for additional information, provide it as soon as possible and follow the instructions given by the relevant visa authority.

What should you do before applying?

Before submitting your application, check that:

  • You are eligible to apply in Singapore
  • You have selected the correct application route
  • Your passport and Singapore residence documents are valid
  • Your supporting documents are current
  • Your financial documents meet the applicable requirements
  • Your flight information matches your intended travel dates
  • Your daily itinerary is complete and realistic
  • Any required authorisation has been prepared if someone is submitting on your behalf
  • You have allowed enough time for processing

Most importantly, check the latest JVAC checklist for your nationality and visa type before submission.

Planning your Japan holiday?

Getting the visa paperwork right is only one part of planning a Japan trip.

Your itinerary should also consider how many cities you can realistically visit, transport connections, hotel locations, seasonal weather, family requirements and your preferred travel pace.

If you are unsure which itinerary fits your travel dates, budget or group, a customised itinerary can also help you avoid trying to fit too much into one trip.
