Itinerary
Highlights: Kansai International Airport, Transfer Independently Kyoto
Meals: None
- Welcome to Japan. Upon arrival at Kansai International Airport in Osaka, make your own way to your hotel in Kyoto.
- Once the capital of Japan, Kyoto remains the country's cultural heart, home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, more than 1,000 Buddhist temples, and hundreds of Shinto shrines. The city is known for its historic architecture, traditional arts, tea culture, and geisha heritage.
- After checking in, the remainder of the day is at leisure. You may wish to explore Kyoto independently or visit areas such as Nishiki Market and the surrounding city centre.
Highlights: Kinkakuji Temple, Nijo Castle
Meals: Breakfast
- Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and free time during the morning before joining your small group tour in the afternoon.
- Visit Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion), one of Kyoto's most recognised landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was later converted into a Zen temple. The temple's upper floors are covered in gold leaf, creating a striking reflection across the surrounding pond.
- Continue to Nijo Castle, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and former Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period. Explore the castle grounds, fortifications, Ninomaru Palace, and the famous "nightingale floors" designed to alert occupants to intruders. The beautifully landscaped Ninomaru Garden adds another layer to this important historic site.
- After sightseeing, return to your hotel.
Highlights: Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka, Yasaka Shrine, Gion District
Meals: Breakfast
- After breakfast, enjoy a full day exploring Kyoto's most famous cultural landmarks.
- Begin at Fushimi Inari Taisha, one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines. The shrine is renowned for its thousands of vermilion Senbon Torii gates that create a striking pathway through the forested slopes of Mount Inari. Dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice and prosperity, the shrine is also recognised for its many fox statues, believed to be messengers of the gods. The full round trip hike to the summit takes two to three hours, but many visitors only walk 30 to 40 minutes to the Yotsutsuji intersection because the number of torii gates decreases beyond that point.
- Continue to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched on the hills of eastern Kyoto. The temple is famous for its large wooden stage, constructed without nails, which overlooks the city and surrounding landscape. Explore key areas including the Main Hall, Jishu Shrine, and Otowa Waterfall. The temple offers a different atmosphere throughout the year, from spring cherry blossoms to colourful autumn foliage.
- Next, stroll through the preserved streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, lined with traditional wooden buildings, tea houses, local shops, and cafés that reflect the character of old Kyoto.
- Visit Yasaka Shrine, the historic guardian shrine of the Gion entertainment district. Dating back more than 1,350 years, the shrine is particularly associated with the famous Gion Matsuri festival.
- Conclude the day in Gion District, Kyoto's best known geisha quarter. Walk through cobblestone lanes lined with traditional machiya townhouses, teahouses, and historic restaurants. If fortunate, you may spot geiko or maiko making their way to evening appointments.
- Return to your hotel after the tour.
Highlights: Todaiji Temple, Nara Park, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Osaka Castle Park, Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori
Meals: Breakfast
- Depart Kyoto this morning and travel to Nara, approximately 1.5 hours by road.
- Your first visit is Todaiji Temple, one of Japan's most significant Buddhist temples and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple houses the Great Buddha of Vairocana, one of the world's largest bronze Buddha statues, standing over 16 metres high. The impressive Daibutsu-den Hall is also among the largest wooden buildings in the world.
- Continue to Nara Park, famous for its hundreds of freely roaming deer, regarded as sacred messengers in Shinto tradition. Visitors may purchase shika senbei (deer crackers) to feed the deer while walking through the park.
- Visit Kasuga Taisha Shrine, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and Nara's most celebrated Shinto shrine. The shrine is known for its hundreds of bronze lanterns and thousands of stone lanterns lining the forested pathways leading to the complex.
- Following the Nara visit, travel to Osaka, a journey of approximately 45 minutes to one hour.
- In the afternoon, explore Osaka Castle Park, one of Japan's most important historic landmarks. Originally constructed in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle played a significant role in Japan's unification. Walk through the castle grounds, view the impressive stone walls and moats, and enjoy views of the Main Tower and Nishinomaru Garden.
- Later, enjoy time at Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street, Osaka's busiest shopping district, before continuing to Dotonbori, the city's most famous entertainment area. Bright neon signs, lively restaurants, waterways, and the iconic Glico Man sign have made Dotonbori one of Osaka's most photographed locations.
- After the tour, transfer to your hotel in Osaka.
