Shanghai gives you a very different first impression.

So if you have enough time, you don't necessarily have to choose Beijing or Xi'an.

Where should you go in China first?

The important thing is not to choose China based on a checklist of famous places.

Choose based on the type of holiday you want.

A traveller with four days may be much happier exploring Shanghai properly than trying to squeeze Beijing, Xi'an and Chengdu into one itinerary.

Someone with 10–14 days has much more flexibility and can build a multi-city route. Current first-timer itinerary guides commonly recommend Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai as the classic route, with Chengdu or scenic regions added when there is more time.
