Yunnan in December: Weather, Packing and Itinerary Guide

Thinking of visiting China in December, but not sure you want the extreme cold of Harbin?
Yunnan could be a lovely alternative.
Located in southwestern China, Yunnan offers a different kind of winter holiday, with historic old towns, mountain scenery, lakeside views and distinctive local cultures. You could spend a morning exploring the streets of Dali, wander through Lijiang's traditional lanes in the afternoon, then travel towards Shangri-La for high-altitude landscapes and a taste of Tibetan culture.

China
Known for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, China is a popular destination for tourists from around the ...
But there's something important to know before you book: Yunnan doesn't have one single winter climate.
Kunming can feel relatively mild during sunny daytime hours, while Lijiang can have cold mornings and evenings. Shangri-La sits at a much higher elevation, where temperatures can drop below freezing and altitude may affect how you feel.
This means your December itinerary needs more thought than simply packing a thick jacket. Here's how to prepare for Yunnan in December, what to expect in each destination, and how to plan a route that suits your travel style.
Is December a good time to visit Yunnan?
Yes, December can be a rewarding time to visit Yunnan if you enjoy cooler weather, scenic landscapes and cultural sightseeing.
Many days can be sunny, especially in lower-elevation destinations, although temperatures drop after sunset. Winter is also a good opportunity to explore historic towns without planning your entire holiday around summer weather.
However, conditions vary by location. You may experience bright sunshine in Dali, chilly evenings in Lijiang and much colder weather in Shangri-La on the same trip.
December is particularly suitable for travellers who want to:
- Explore historic towns and traditional streets.
- Enjoy mountain and lake scenery.
- Experience local food and cultural attractions.
- See snow-covered mountain landscapes where conditions allow.
- Take a slower-paced holiday with a mix of sightseeing and relaxation.
If you're hoping for guaranteed snowfall, however, Yunnan isn't the safest choice for every stop. Snow depends on location, elevation and weather conditions. The appeal of the province is its variety, not a promise that everywhere will look like a winter postcard.

1. Dali in December: Lakeside scenery and historic streets
Dali is a good place to begin if you enjoy a mixture of culture, scenery and relaxed sightseeing.
The historic town has traditional architecture, narrow streets, shops and cafés. Outside the town, Erhai Lake provides a scenic backdrop for lakeside outings, while the Cangshan mountains rise behind the surrounding landscape.

December can bring clear skies and bright sunshine, but don't let the sunshine fool you. Mornings and evenings can be chilly, and open areas beside the lake can feel colder when it's windy.
What is the weather like in December?
Expect cool mornings, potentially pleasant daytime conditions when the sun is out, and colder evenings. Temperatures vary with weather and location, so check the forecast for your travel dates rather than relying on a single average.
What should you do in Dali?
Explore Dali Ancient Town at a relaxed pace. Visit Xizhou to see traditional Bai architecture and learn about local culture. Enjoy views around Erhai Lake, choosing a shorter lakeside outing if you're travelling with seniors or young children. Try local Yunnan dishes and leave time for cafés and independent exploring.

Dali works particularly well when you don't want every day to revolve around a major attraction. You can enjoy the scenery without filling your schedule with long excursions.

Best for: Couples, families, senior travellers who are comfortable walking, and anyone who enjoys a slower cultural holiday.
Keep in mind: The old-town streets may be uneven, and a lakeside outing can involve more walking or time outdoors than expected. Choose accommodation with convenient access if mobility is a concern.
2. Lijiang in December: Ancient towns and snow-mountain views
Lijiang combines historic-town charm with access to some of Yunnan's most recognisable mountain scenery.
Lijiang Old Town is known for its traditional buildings, waterways and narrow lanes. Nearby, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain provides a dramatic alpine backdrop and is a major excursion for visitors who want to see a different side of Yunnan.
In December, the contrast between sunny daytime conditions and cold evenings can be noticeable. The old town is enjoyable for leisurely exploring, but you'll want a warm layer once the sun goes down.
What should you do in Lijiang?
Wander around Lijiang Old Town and explore its traditional streets. Visit Shuhe Ancient Town for another historic-town experience. Consider Jade Dragon Snow Mountain if the weather, transport and your group's health and mobility make it suitable. Visit Black Dragon Pool Park for views of the mountain when visibility allows.

Is Jade Dragon Snow Mountain suitable for everyone?
Not necessarily. The mountain excursion involves high elevation, and some sightseeing options take visitors considerably higher than Lijiang itself. The effects of altitude can become more noticeable at these elevations, even for otherwise healthy travellers.
Check the altitude of your chosen cable-car route and viewing area before booking. Follow local guidance, avoid rushing, and don't assume that an excursion is suitable simply because it is popular.
Best for: First-time Yunnan visitors, couples, families who enjoy cultural sightseeing and travellers who want mountain scenery alongside historic towns.
Keep in mind: Lijiang is already at roughly 2,400 metres above sea level. If you plan to continue to Shangri-La, allow time to adjust and avoid packing your first days with strenuous activities.
3. Shangri-La in December: High-altitude winter landscapes
Shangri-La is the destination to consider if you're looking for a colder, highland experience with Tibetan cultural influences, mountain landscapes and the possibility of winter scenery.
The town sits at around 3,200–3,300 metres above sea level, significantly higher than Dali or Lijiang. December is cold, with temperatures potentially falling below freezing, particularly at night. Snow is possible, but local conditions and access to individual attractions vary.
What should you do in Shangri-La?
Explore Dukezong Ancient Town. Visit Songzanlin Monastery, an important Tibetan Buddhist monastery. Consider a scenic excursion to the surrounding highland landscapes, depending on weather and road conditions. Allow time to enjoy the local food, architecture and cultural atmosphere without rushing between stops. Shangri-La can feel very different from Dali and Lijiang. The landscape is more alpine, the air is thinner, and winter temperatures call for warmer clothing.

Is Shangri-La worth visiting in December?
It can be, especially if you're interested in highland scenery and Tibetan culture. However, it's not a destination I'd automatically add to every Yunnan itinerary.
The extra journey, colder conditions and altitude are important considerations, particularly if you are travelling with young children, older relatives or anyone with existing health concerns.
Best for: Travellers who want a colder winter landscape, cultural experiences and highland scenery.
Think carefully if: Your group prefers milder weather, has limited mobility, or would find it difficult to manage a change in elevation.
Understanding altitude in Yunnan
Altitude is one of the most important things to consider when planning a Yunnan trip, especially if you're travelling from Singapore, where everyday life is close to sea level.

Here's how the main stops compare.
Kunming (Approximate elevation: 1,900 m): Moderate elevation; allow time to settle in after arrival
Dali (Approximate elevation: 2,000 m): Slightly higher than Kunming, with cool winter evenings
Lijiang (Approximate elevation: 2,400 m): Some travellers may notice breathlessness or headaches
Shangri-La (Approximate elevation: 3,200–3,300 m) : Higher risk of altitude-related symptoms
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Much higher at upper sightseeing areas): Extra caution; exact elevation depends on the attraction and route
Elevations are approximate, and the altitude of a mountain excursion can be much higher than the town where you sleep.
What does altitude feel like?
At higher elevations, there is less available oxygen with each breath. Some people notice they become breathless more quickly when walking uphill or climbing stairs. Others may develop a headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual fatigue or difficulty sleeping.
Being fit does not guarantee that you will avoid altitude sickness. People respond differently, and symptoms can develop even when you take precautions.
How to plan your route more comfortably
A sensible approach is to travel from lower to higher elevations: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, then Shangri-La. This gives you more time to adjust than travelling directly from a low-elevation city to Shangri-La. However, gradual travel does not eliminate altitude risk.
When you arrive at a higher elevation:
- Keep the first day relatively light.
- Walk at a comfortable pace and avoid strenuous activity at first.
- Drink water regularly and avoid excessive alcohol.
- Follow medical advice if you have a condition that could be affected by altitude.
- Don't continue ascending if you develop symptoms that could indicate altitude sickness.
A headache accompanied by nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue deserves attention. Severe or worsening symptoms, breathlessness at rest, confusion or difficulty walking require urgent medical assessment and descent where appropriate. Do not rely on oxygen cans or home remedies to treat potentially serious altitude illness.
If you're planning to visit Shangri-La or the upper areas of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, discuss altitude risks with a healthcare professional beforehand if you have medical concerns.
What to pack for Yunnan in December
The biggest packing mistake is preparing for one temperature when your itinerary includes several elevations.
For Dali and Lijiang, you'll want layers for cool mornings and evenings. For Shangri-La and high-altitude mountain excursions, bring substantially warmer clothing.
Thermal base layers: Useful for early starts, cold evenings and higher-altitude destinations. Bring enough to layer comfortably under your normal clothes.
A warm insulated jacket: A down jacket or another well-insulated coat is useful for Shangri-La and mountain outings. A wind-resistant outer layer helps in exposed areas.
Comfortable walking shoes: Choose supportive shoes with good grip for old-town streets, parks and sightseeing. If snow or ice is forecast, consider footwear designed for those conditions.
Sun protection and moisturiser: The air can feel dry, and mountain sunshine can be strong. Pack sunscreen, lip balm, moisturiser and sunglasses.
One more tip: Don't pack only thick winter clothing. Layers are more flexible when sunny afternoons feel comfortable but temperatures drop sharply after sunset.
Is Yunnan in December suitable for families and senior travellers?
Yes, provided you choose the route carefully. Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La offer different levels of physical demand, and the best itinerary is not necessarily the one that includes every destination.
If you're travelling with children: Dali and Lijiang can offer a good balance of old-town exploration, scenery and cultural experiences. Children may enjoy lakeside outings, traditional streets and mountain views. For Shangri-La, consider how your children handle cold weather, longer drives and changes in altitude. Keep outdoor activities flexible, bring warm layers and allow plenty of rest.
If you're travelling with parents or senior relatives: A Yunnan trip can be enjoyable for older travellers, but altitude, walking surfaces and the pace of the itinerary deserve special attention.
Choose hotels with lifts or ground-floor rooms where needed, and confirm accessibility before booking. Stay close to the areas you want to explore to reduce unnecessary walking.
Allow more time for transfers and rest between sightseeing stops. Avoid packing several major attractions into one day.
Discuss high-altitude visits with a healthcare professional if anyone has heart or lung conditions or other relevant medical concerns. Don't assume a cable-car excursion is suitable for everyone simply because transport is provided.
Shangri-La is not automatically unsuitable for seniors, but its elevation makes it a more demanding option. If anyone develops possible altitude-sickness symptoms, stop exertion and seek medical advice rather than pushing on to the next attraction.
For groups with mixed ages or fitness levels, a route focused on Dali and Lijiang may be a more comfortable starting point.
A sample 8-day Yunnan itinerary for December
For a first visit, this route combines Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La, moving from lower to higher elevations. It is designed for travellers who want a mix of culture and scenery without changing hotels every night.
Days 1–2: Dali (Culture and lakeside scenery): Arrive and settle in before exploring Dali Ancient Town. Visit Xizhou for its traditional Bai architecture and choose a relaxed Erhai Lake outing. Keep the first day light after your journey.
Days 3–5: Lijiang (Historic towns and mountain scenery): Travel to Lijiang and explore the old town at a comfortable pace. Add Shuhe Ancient Town or Black Dragon Pool Park. Reserve another day for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain only if conditions, transport and your group's health and mobility make it appropriate.
Days 6–7: Shangri-La (Highland culture and winter landscapes): Travel to Shangri-La, allowing time for the journey and rest on arrival. Explore Dukezong Ancient Town and visit Songzanlin Monastery if open and accessible. Keep activities light and monitor how everyone feels at altitude.
Day 8: Departure: Allow time for transfers. Arrange your departure based on confirmed transport schedules. Depending on flight availability, you may need to return to Lijiang or Kunming, or book a suitable domestic connection from Shangri-La.
This is a sample route, not a fixed schedule. The order of travel allows a gradual increase in elevation, but the itinerary should still be adjusted to the group's health, mobility, travel dates and transport availability.

For a more relaxed family or senior itinerary: Spend the full eight days between Dali and Lijiang and leave Shangri-La for another trip. You can still enjoy plenty of cultural sightseeing and mountain scenery without the additional high-altitude stop.
For a longer holiday, add time rather than squeezing in more destinations. Confirm train and flight schedules before finalising hotel nights.
