What 16 Years in travel has taught us about planning a better holiday

A good holiday doesn't necessarily start with a destination.

Sometimes, it starts with a conversation.

Where are you going? Who are you travelling with? What have you enjoyed before? What didn't you enjoy? How much time do you actually have? And, perhaps most importantly, what do you want this holiday to feel like?

After 16 years in travel, we've learned that planning a better holiday isn't always about finding more things to do.

Often, it's about knowing what to leave out.

More isn't always better

It's tempting to look at a seven-day holiday and think:

"How much can we fit in?"

Three cities. Four attractions. Two day trips. A couple of restaurants saved from Instagram.

Technically, it might all fit.

But just because something fits on a timetable doesn't mean it belongs in your holiday.

A good itinerary considers travel time, transfers, hotel changes, rest and the pace that suits the people travelling.

Sometimes the best recommendation is:

"Yes, you could do that. But we wouldn't recommend it."

That's where planning becomes more than simply putting places on a map.

Who you're travelling with changes everything

Two people can visit the same destination and need completely different holidays.

A young couple might happily spend the day exploring on foot.

A family with young children might need shorter sightseeing periods and more flexibility.

A group of friends might want a completely different balance of activities and free time.

The destination hasn't changed.

The traveller has.

The cheapest option isn't always the best value

Price matters. But price isn't the only thing that determines value.

A hotel that's slightly more expensive but much better located could save hours of transfers.

An extra night could make an itinerary considerably less rushed.

A more convenient flight time could make a huge difference to a family travelling with children.

A private transfer might cost more, but could remove a significant amount of stress.

The right question isn't always: "What's cheapest?"

Sometimes it's: "What gives us the best experience for what we're spending?"

Small details can completely change an itinerary

This is one of the biggest things travel planning has taught us.

The details matter.

Children's ages.

Dietary requirements.

Walking ability.

Hotel preferences.

Previous travel experience.

Whether someone gets tired easily.

Whether you've already visited a particular city.

Whether the trip is for a birthday, anniversary or honeymoon.

Whether you'd rather wake up early and explore or have a slow breakfast and take your time.

These might seem like small details.

But together, they can completely change what makes sense.

Personalisation doesn't always mean starting from zero

Bespoke travel doesn't necessarily mean creating a completely new itinerary from scratch.

Sometimes it's much simpler.

An extra night. A different hotel location. Fewer hotel changes. A private transfer. More free time. A particular experience.

Removing something that doesn't suit you.

Those small changes can turn a standard itinerary into something that feels much more personal.

After 16 years, this is what we believe

Travel planning has become easier in many ways. There is more information, more choice and more inspiration than ever.

But more choice doesn't automatically mean better decisions.

A great holiday isn't necessarily the one with the longest itinerary, the most attractions or the cheapest price.

It's the one that makes sense for you.

And sometimes, the best travel advice isn't telling you what you can do.

It's helping you decide what you should do.
